Laser Tattoo Removal

How does it work?

During a laser tattoo removal treatment, the laser hand piece administers pulses of energy that penetrate the skin and are absorbed by the tattoo ink. This focused energy causes the tattoo pigment to shatter into minuscule fragments, which are then progressively eliminated by the body's immune system. Over the course of several weeks following treatment, the client should observe the tattoo gradually becoming lighter in appearance. With each laser treatment, more and more of the tattoo pigment is broken down until only a minimal amount of ink remains.

How long can it take?

Tattoo removal is a process that necessitates a considerable amount of patience and commitment from patients. Typically, complete removal requires between 6 and 10 treatments, with each treatment spaced at least 6 to 8 weeks apart. The rationale behind multiple treatments is that not all of the tattoo ink can be shattered in one session. The body requires time to flush away the shattered ink particles, which is why waiting between treatments is imperative. This waiting period also allows any scabs or blisters to heal, thereby minimizing the possibility of over-treating the area and causing unwanted side effects.

Possible risks

Whilst the laser treatment itself is known to be a safe, there are some risks in terms of side effects and outcome.

Laser tattoo removal may cause some damage to the skin surface in the form of microscopic holes, inflammation, and pinpoint bleeding.

Other risks include:

  • Redness and swelling can be present for 48 hours following treatment.

  • Hypopigmentation – Loss of melanin within the skin causing white spots.

  • Hyperpigmentation - Darker spots that appear on the skins surface.

  • Changes in texture -These changes are not usually permanent. Sometimes these changes have been caused by the tattoo itself and become apparent once the pigment is removed.

  • Burns are very rare.

  • Allergic reaction is extremely rare but can arise.

Consultation

All clients that are interested in having this treatment will need to attend a consultation to go the through a medical checklist and must have a test patch to make sure they are suitable for treatment. Two weeks after having a test patch carried out, the client may book in for a full treatment.
